Linda Jean Nichols ~ April 13, 2023

Carlin, NV/Conesus:  Linda Jean Nichols, 62, passed away peacefully in her home on April 13, 2023.  Linda was born on May 14, 1960, in Rochester, NY, to parents Arthur and Lorraine (Shamp) Simpson. Linda was raised in Rochester but would spend many summers going back and forth to Lakeville, NY, where she made many memories with her best friend, Rene Nichols (Pauline).  Although their families knew each other for years, it wasn’t until one summer in high school that Doug Nichols stole his baby sister’s best friend. Rene, of course, gave her blessing for her best friend to date her older brother. Linda graduated from Livonia Central High School in 1978.  Doug and Linda would go on to marry on August 2, 1980.

Linda and Doug lived in the areas of Lima, Lakeville, and Conesus, New York. It was in Conesus where Linda and Doug would start to raise their three children; Arthur Russell, Matthew Clay, and Philip Walter.  In October of 1996, Linda and Douglas made the choice to move out West to provide more opportunities for their children. Doug and Linda raised their three boys in Round Mountain, Nevada.  For many years, Linda worked for Round Mountain Gold as a Custodial Supervisor. After her boys moved away and started having children of their own, Linda knew she needed to be a part of her grandchildren’s lives.  In 2009, Linda and Doug moved to Carlin, Nevada to be closer to their grandchildren.  Linda loved being a stay-at-home grandmother.  Of all the jobs Linda had, being a grandmother was her favorite.  Linda’s grandchildren were everything to her, and she never passed up an opportunity to care for them.  When Linda wasn’t spending time with her grandchildren, she was busy making the house in Carlin a home for Doug. Linda loved watching her favorite TLC television shows, planting flowers in her garden, and hosting family gatherings. Linda loved the simple things in life and never missed a chance to hang out with her family and friends.

Linda is preceded in death by her dad, Arthur Simpson; mother, Lorraine Simpson; sister, Robin Simpson; and brother, Robert Simpson.  Linda is survived by her husband Doug; sons, Arthur (Kassie) Nichols, Matthew (Taylor) Nichols, and Philip (Kristen) Nichols; three grandchildren, Karli, Blane, and Finley; sister, Bonnie (Brad) Braun; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Services for Linda Jean Nichols will be on April 22, 2023, at 1:00 PM at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 277 Willow Street, Elko, Nevada.  Following services, a gathering will take place at the Elko County Fairgrounds, Home and Arts Building, 13 Fairgrounds Road, Elko, Nevada. Linda’s service will be streamed live on the St. Mark Lutheran Church and Preschool Facebook page on April 22, 2023 at 1:00 pm (PST) for those who cannot attend.  The link is https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064373571847  In Linda’s memory, please plant your favorite flower and hug your loved ones.  A Celebration of Life will be held in New York at a later date.  To send a condolence or share a memory of Linda please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

Lou Ann B. Kane- April 5, 2023

Bristol: Lou Ann passed away peacefully on April 5, 2023 at FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, New York. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey, daughter Betsy (Andrew Lavin), son Greg (Kimberly), and two grandchildren Ethan and Meredith Kane.  Over the past several years, Lou Ann was lovingly cared for by her husband Jeffrey, of 48 years, who provided at-home support for as long as possible.  She was surrounded by the love of her family throughout her final days.

Known as a witty, strong willed, and generous individual, Lou Ann is someone who always did the right thing.  As a graduate of Penn State University, she taught math for several years in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania before moving to the Rochester area.  She briefly continued teaching in Rochester before taking on the full-time job of raising her two children.  For decades, Lou Ann also supported her husband’s business through daily administrative tasks.  She was a devoted mother and spouse who enabled the success of each of her family members.

Lou Ann loved gardening, the outdoors, and being near the water. Her backyard gardens in Penfield were a naturally flowing landscape of unique flowers, berries, shrubs, and trees. The family vacations she planned were almost always to the Adirondack mountains or Maine, where she enjoyed taking short hikes and boat rides.  Later in life, she moved to the southern hills of Bloomfield, on the border of Bristol, New York, and spent her time between there and Honeoye Lake, always enjoying the wildlife and scenery.  She had an appreciation for cultural arts, supporting many years of music lessons for her children at the Hochstein School and Eastman School of Music, and liked to attend theater productions at Geva Theater.

Her legacy is perhaps best visible in the lives of her children, whom she cared for with an unrivaled level of commitment. Her daughter, Betsy, lives and works in the Adirondack Mountains and has without question inherited her passion for gardening and the great outdoors. Her son, Greg, is a music teacher, a direct result of Lou Ann’s promotion and support of music education, and tireless transportation to lessons and performances.

The family would like to thank the staff at both Thompson Hospital and the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center for the wonderful support, care, and dignity that they extended to Lou Ann during her final two months. In lieu of flowers or a donation, the family is encouraging you to plant something in your backyard this spring in honor of Lou Ann and think of Lou Ann’s love of gardening as you do so.
