I was stunned to hear of Billie’s passing! I only heard yesterday (10/7), so I missed her memorial service, something that will always grieve me.
I knew Billie for donkey’s years! We trained together in St. Paul, MN for SVRS and knew each other for many years as colleagues and friends. I always enjoyed working with her; as a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), her perspective on interpreting, deafness and the Deaf community was always enlightening and, quite often, entertaining.
Beyond that, however, I’ll always treasure the time we spent together outside of work. I remember spending quiet evenings in her living room in her little house in Scottsville. We talked some about her life before we’d met, but mainly about her daughters – their achievements, their futures, but mainly how much she loved them.
With a spirit as big as Billie’s, I don’t believe she’s gone, just starting on down the path of a new journey. Much love and good luck, Billie! You’ve got a big, new adventure awaiting you.
Billie will be remembered for her humor, love of her family and commitment to the Deaf community. She was an O. G. Interpreter in the best possible way. She will be treasured , love and respected! Rest well, friend
