Canadice: Ryan J. Helfer, 22 years of Canadice Hollow Road in Canadice died suddenly Sunday December 14, 2008 at Strong Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident late Saturday evening. He was born in Rochester,NY March 12, 1986 the son of James and Elizabeth Cook Helfer. Ryan graduated in 2005 from Honeoye Central School where he was very active in the soccer program. An avid fisherman, he spent a great deal of time fishing with his father at nearby Canadice and Hemlock Lakes. He was an employee of MDI in Rochester.

Ryan is survived by his parents, James and Elizabeth “Betsy” Cook Helfer of Canadice; his brother Christopher Hoover of Rochester. His maternal grandparents, Terry and Frank Ryan of Rochester, Raymond Cook of Penfield,. His paternal grandparents, James and Patricia Helfer of Irondequoit, Mary and Ron Bennett of Hunt, NY. Sarah S. “Sally” Spencer – December 5, 2008

CONESUS: Sarah S. “Sally” Spencer, 88 years, of Niver Road, Conesus died Friday, December 5, 2008 at the home of her son, Robert, in Tennessee. She was born in Conesus, July 11, 1920 the daughter of Thomas and Pauline Proctor Spaine. Sally was a member of the former St. William’s Church in Conesus, where she was instrumental in the building of the Church Annex during Rev. Roy Hagerty’s pastorate. A lifelong Conesus resident, she was an avid reader and was looked upon as a “grandmother figure” by many of the neighborhood children. She enjoyed baking, especially Christmas cookies, and also served several years as an election inspector in the Town of Conesus. She was married in 1940 to her husband Eugene Spencer, who predeceased her, along with daughters, Sharon and Rita.

She is survived by her sons, Robert (Margie) Spencer of Drummond, TN. and Thomas (Lynn) Spencer of Amherst, NH. Also, her son-in-law, Dr. Eric Bendixen of NM. 5 grandchildren, James, Kelly Sue, Michelle, Timothy and Jeffrey. 4 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Edward G. Lavery “Ed” – December 4, 2008

LIVONIA: On Thursday, December 4, 2008, Edward G. Lavery, 68 years, of Livonia, passed away after a long bout with cancer, at his Big Tree St. home. Ed was born November 19, 1940, the son of Edward and Beatrice Saunders Lavery. Ed was loving husband, father, and friend. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Anne McCormick Lavery. His 4 children and their spouses, Tim and Kim Lavery of Clifton Park, Kathy Lavery of Baltimore, Mike and Colleen Lavery of Baltimore, and Colleen and Rob Murphy of Victor, He was adored by his 8 grandchildren, Cassidy, Allie, Ben, Luke, Brayden, Kaitlin, Abbie, and Danielle.

Ed was a graduate of the SUNY at Geneseo, and became an elementary school teacher at Honeoye-Falls Lima Central School for 35 years. He also served as a school board member for the Livonia Central School District, where he presided as President for one year. Ed was a long time member of the Livonia Rotary Club where he held the position of secretary for several years right up to his death. In 2008, he was honored with Rotary Internationals Paul Harris Award, Rotarys highest honor. He also was a dedicated member of the Genesee Valley Hunt and volunteered his time in both the Honeoye-Falls and Livonia Fire Departments.

Miriam “Midge” Baker – December 2, 2008

HONEOYE: Miriam “Midge” Baker, 93 years, of Bellvue St. Honeoye, died Tuesday December 2, 2008 at the Avon Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was born in Brooklyn, November 10, 1915. She and her late husband Charles “Chick” Baker, supervised several homes throughout New York State for wayward youth, prior to retiring and moving to Honeoye. “Chick” predeceased her in August 2005..

South Lima: Samuel N. Finocchario, 53 years, of South Lima Road in South Lima died suddenly, November 25, 2008 at Strong Memorial Hospital from injuries involving an accident at his home. He was born in Canandaigua, NY, June 25, 1955 the son of Natale and Lucy Cicero Finocchario. Sam had a life long love of farming, which included his collection of Farmall tractors. He was a 29 year employee of the former Niagara Mohawk Corp which then became known as National Grid being based in Avon, NY. He was a member of St. Matthews Church in Livonia and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Employees. He was predeceased by his Father, Natale Finocchario and his Father-in-law, Leonard Willard.

Geneseo: When Fred Bright passed away on November 18, the Geneseo community lost one of its most celebrated coaches, sports legends and friend.

On May 19 of this year, Bright was honored by the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) at its annual awards banquet. He received the Damore Distinguished Service Award for his numerous years of commitment and growth of the conference.

Bright coached SUNY Geneseo’s women’s soccer team for 14 years, compiling an all-time conference record of 177-62-17. Over this period his teams won four SUNYAC championships, five ECAC Upstate NY Tournament crowns, appeared in three consecutive NCAA tournaments, and even reached the Final Four in 1994, his final year of coaching.

His interest in sports went well beyond soccer. He coached Geneseo’s men’s tennis teams from 1975 to 1980, achieving a notable 36-22 record. He made major contributions to SUNYAC’s operating codes for both women’s tennis and soccer.

Bright was named SUNYAC Soccer Coach of the Year (1985) and the National Soccer Coaches Coach of the Year/Northeast (1994). His many coaching achievement were also recognized when he took home the coveted Rochester Area Sportsman Award in 1988.

When he wasn’t coaching, Bright held of number of other posts at SUNY Geneseo. These included Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education (1971-1995), Chair of the Health and Physical Education Department (1984-1991), and Director of Sports Information (1991-1995).

Fred Bright married Joan Fisher 46 years ago. The Brights have two daughters (Carol and Sharon) and one son (Jeffrey); all are SUNY Geneseo graduates. They also have three grandchildren.

Bright was active in many community activities, including a dozen years as a member of the Geneseo Rotary Club. He served on the Board of Directors of Rotary’s camp for handicapped for seven years. From 1975-1985 Bright was the director of the American Cancer Society’s annual tennis tournament.
A native of Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Lock Haven State College (1957), his M. Ed degree in Recreation Education from Penn State (1962). He did his military service in Europe from 1957 through 1959. He taught physical education in Lehighton, Pennsylvania (1959-1961) and was a recreation specialist with the State of Vermont (1962-1964) before joining the SUNY Geneseo faculty in 1964.

After his official retirement in 1995, Fred turned his attention to another of his great passions: telling stories. Some of his favorites will appear in the soon-to-be-published “SUNY Geneseo: From Normal School to Public Ivy.”

Canadice: Tim Fergerson, 66, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his life partner of 48 years, Arlan “Lan” Cady, mother Norma Fergerson, father Chester Fergerson. He is survived by his brother Terry Fergerson, nieces Darcy and Elisabeth, nephew Jesse Fergerson, uncle Stanley Fergerson, aunt Janet Jaquay, numerous cousins, and many dear and devoted friends.

Tim was a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and an Assistant Professor of Art at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at RIT where he developed and directed the first NTID Art Gallery. Tim was an active member of the Genesee Valley Antique Dealers Association and a certified appraiser. He was a partner in Canadice Farm Antiques and House DiChristopher Design, served on the Boards of Sonnenberg Gardens and the Corn Hill Historical Preservation Association, and belonged to the Honeoye, NY Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Tim was a member of the Fabric Workers Union and the Bristol Hills Players. For many years he was an active member of the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery and served as co-chair of the Art and Antiques segment of the annual Channel 21 Auction. Tim will be lovingly remembered for the creative energy and artistic talent he brought to every aspect of his life.

A celebration of Tim’s life will be held Saturday, December 6, 2008, at 1:00 PM at St. Luke’s and St. Simon Cyrene, 17 South Fitzhugh Street, Rochester, NY.

Avon: Myrtle M. Farrell “Myrt” died November 4, 2008 at Kirkhaven Nursing Home at age 88 years.She was born October 31, 1920 in Avon New York the daughter of Rex and Maryetta Litte Moulton.

She was predeceased by her husband Thomas R. Farrell. Myrt is survived by her children; Thomas “Bucky” Farrell of Avon and Mary Brownell of Corpus Christi, Texas. Avon: November 3, 2008 at age 92 at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home. Born June 25, 1916 in Buffalo, NY “a female bull.” Predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Leslie “Slate” Cole; parents Edwin and Edna Bull; sister Virginia Borden and grandson John Stocking.

Survived by her children; Beverly (Thor) Luther of Conesus, Margaret Stocking of Sun City Arizona, Leslie L. Cole Jr. of Livonia. Daughter-in-law Elma “Ron” Reed. Four grandsons; David (Lisa) and Michael (Kathleen) Luther, Matthew (Jen) Cole and Jason (Keri) Cole. Also survived by five great grandchildren including “a new baby girl” the first girl in our family in 64 years! Also many nieces and nephews.

Mother was a proud lifelong Republican – A member of Town of Avon, County, and State Republican Committees. She proudly represented District 5 in Avon for approximately 50 years! Also she was active in the Avon PTA in the 1950’s and 1960’s holding offices at the local and state level. A member for 60 plus years of the Central Presbyterian Church in Avon where she held many positions over the years. Her favorite being the “childrens room” where she helped children Christmas shop for their parents and family. Then there was the “Rebecca Lodge # 492” where she was a proud member for over 50 years and was Nobel Grand several times. There was also the Local and County Home Bureau where she held numerous positions and filled our home with all sorts of crafts from silver trays to sewing screens! Golly, she was busy! She took such pride in all her various interests….each one was her favorite. Mom will be missed.

The family is very grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Gerry by the entire staff at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home.

She was born in Perry, NY the daughter of Edward and Mabel McGill Gavin. Jo was predeceased by her husband John, on January 15, 1981. She was a graduate of Warsaw High School and received her BS in Nursing Education from the University of Rochester. Prior to retirement, she was employed at Rochester Psychiatric Center, and the Monroe Community College where she retired from in June 1981. She was a member of the RPC Retirement Group, MCC Foundation, and the MCC Retirement Group. She was also recognized as a Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College.

Naples: Nadina K. Stevens, 71 years,of County Road 12, Naples died Thursday, October 30, 2008 at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home in Livonia. She was born in Cadosia, NY, December 3, 1936 the daughter of Earl and Hazel Kingsbury. She was a longtime member of the Naples Central School Board where she served as President for 7 years. Also, she served on the Regional BOCES Board for 20 years. She was a self employed Real Estate Broker who also served on the South Bristol Town Board. Joyce’s great loves were her family and friends. She was always there for those she loved, and she always took care of them. Other things that brought joy into her life were her collections of designer teddy bears and antique and reproduction dolls, traveling and sightseeing, and country and western music. She enjoyed doting on her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, who equally adored her.

After her retirement, Joyce spent time each week volunteering at the Syracuse Nursing Home and really loved spending time with her special friends there. When the time came that she needed care herself, she lived for a time at Horizons Assisted Living Facility in Canandaigua and at the MM Ewing Continuing Care Center, where she earned the nickname “Sparky”.

Joyce was a special light in the lives of many. She will be greatly missed and carried in our hearts forever.

She is survived by her children, John Grant and Jean Grant both of Florida. Step-children, Alan (Janice) Manzer of Phoenix, NY, Roseanne (Ray) Breidigan of Muir,PA, Barbara Coomber of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Nancy (Jim) Manzer Vollbrecht of Vienna, Virginia. 11 grandchildren, Amy, Reasa, John,Jr., Tara, Angel, Matthew, Jesse, Benjamin, Zachary, Cecelia, and Nathan. 8 great-grandchildren. Sisters, Frances (Norman) Wilmot, Doris Matthews, and Lois White all of Florida. Brothers, Carl (Beverly) Ottman of Johnson City, NY and Bruce (Florence) Ottman of Johnson City, NY. several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Clyde R. Kramer “Barney”

Livonia: Clyde R. Kramer, 88 years, of 5 Wildbriar Drive in Livonia died Thursday October 23, 2008 at Highland Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness. He was born in Valencia, PA., June 1, 1920, the son of George and Edna Hoffman Kramer. A Navy Veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Avon VFW Post 5292 and the American Legion. An avid coin collector, he was a member of the neumsmatic society. He also was very involved with baseball card trading. He was a retiree of Lucidol in Piffard, NY.

Barney was predeceased by his wife, Alice and their son Eugene Kramer. He is survived by his children, Clyde Kramer, Jr. of Livonia, Barbara (Claude) VanVolkenburg of Livonia, James (Jean) Kramer of Houston, Texas, Gary (Kerri) Kramer of Avon. Daughter-in-law, Juanita Kramer of Houston, Texas. 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren. 2 Brothers, Glenn Kramer of Scottsville and James (Peg) Kramer of Valencia, PA. 1 Sister, Myrtle Werling of Oregon. several nieces & nephews.

Dorothy D. Owens

Dansville: Dorothy D. Owens, 79 years, of Main St. Dansville, NY died Sunday evening, October 19, 2008, at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home in Livonia, where she had been a patient for a short period of time.. She was born in Scottsville, NY, December 5, 1928 the daughter of Claude E. and Muriel May Snover. Throughout her career, she worked a variety of jobs including being a sales representative at the former Margaret C. Mack Real Estate Agency in Dansville. She was a member of the Audobon Society, the Nature Conservancy and the ASPCA. She was a very loyal and faithful fan of the Buffalo Bills, attending a game as recently as September to root her favorite team on to victory.

She is survived by her children, John C. (Linda) Owens,Jr. of Canaseraga, Richard J. Owens of Beaverton, Oregon, Virginia LaCrow of Arlington, Mass., William Owens of Honeoye, NY and Jill Owens of Lewiston, Maine. 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. several nieces and nephews.

Robert S. Bulmer “Joe”

Livonia/Conesus Lake: Robert Sanderson Bulmer of East Lake Road in Livonia died Thursday October 16, 2008 at age 80 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Charlotte. His son Richard (Lynn) Bulmer of San Jose California; His daughters Susan (Edward) Swift of Livonia and Sharon Bulmer of Rochester, NY. Grandchildren: Julie (Andrew) Montesano, Jared (Bonnie) Swift, Jeffrey Swift, and Justine Swift. Five great- grandchildren; and sisters Margaret Farr and Donna MacArthur.

Robert was born in Conesus, NY on March 8, 1928 the son of Oliver Bulmer and Florence Vyner. Prior to retirement he was a plumber/steamfitter for New York State working at the Industry State School for Boys in Rush, NY. Robert served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1945-1946.
