Douglas C. Coykendall ~ July 30, 2016

Coykendall, Douglas

Lakeville/Geneseo: October 23, 1937 – July 30, 2016. Peacefully, after a short but complicated series of events. It began in May with low energy and occasional dizziness thought to be related to low blood pressure. Meds adjusted. Next came the return of cluster headaches after 30 years in remission, relentless clusters followed by dehydration, extreme weakness, dizziness, and fatigue. After several hospital stays and loads of tests a diagnosis was produced. A widespread aggressive cancer was found, complicated by cardiac issues and the onset of seizures, leaving little option but to alleviate his pain with comfort care. While this felt like a long journey, it occurred over a relatively short period for which family and friends are grateful.

Doug was predeceased by his parents, Lee and Mabel Coykendall (Thompson), stepdad Al Thompson, sister in law Joyce (Jack) Coykendall, and brother in law William (Janet) Simpson. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Patricia, his daughter Debi and her spouse John Barth, his brother Jack, sister in law Carol (Wally) Page, brother in law James Simpson, several nieces and nephews.

In his youth, Doug loved to play many sports, tinker with cars, learn from his Dad, and hot rod with his Hemlock pals Ralph, Larry, Billy, and John to name a few. Mom’s cooking was the best, as well as Aunt Doris’s and Mrs. Trott’s. He really missed those meals during his Navy stint in the late 50’s, serving in the Construction Battalion at such places as Alaska and Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean. Soon came family and work life, while dedicated to both, he still kept up with his golf game and enjoyed many years at Lima Country Club rounding with Jerry, Charlie, Frank, Brent, John Sr., Jr., Larry, Dick, plus more, wife Patricia, eventually Debi and John too. Doug retired from Getinge (formerly Sybron Castle) and kept in touch with several coworkers. He enjoyed 18 years of retirement and drove across this country and back numerous times with his wife. Throughout his life Doug had visited all 50 states, some more than once, an accomplishment he really enjoyed….. almost as much as March Madness!

A Celebration of Doug’s Life, luncheon, will be held Tuesday, August 9th at Lima Country Club, 7470 Chase Road, Lima from noon to 3pm. All who knew him are welcome to join us. Memorial contributions may be made to the Livonia Ambulance Fund, PO Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487 or the Geneseo Ambulance Fund, PO Box 428, Geneseo, NY 14454.
