Honeoye: Passed on December 7, 2016, at age 75. Larry will be missed for his intelligence, dry humor, meticulous attention to detail and love of family.
Larry was predeceased by his father, Floyd Coon. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon A. Coon; his daughter Kristin (Boomer) Woodward; and his son Stephen (Emily) Coon, all of Honeoye. He is also survived by his grandchildren Daniel, Jesse and Jemma; his mother, Kathaleen Coon of Troy, NY; his brother, Dennis Coon, of Erie, PA; and his sisters, Nancy Coon Arnold of Sun City Center, FL, Cheryl Coon Clark of Rensselaer, NY and Janice (Michael) Sansolo of Potomac, MD. Nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
Larry was born in 1941 in Syracuse, NY. As the oldest sibling, he was a teacher, friend and partner in mischief to his brothers and sisters; and spent many happy summers with them at the family’s camp on Twitchell Lake in the Adirondacks.
Trained as a Mechanical Designer, Larry found great satisfaction in his work. He held jobs across the country with numerous companies including General Electric, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Corning; working on projects from the Apollo mission to Gorilla Glass.
Through the years, he logged millions of miles driving to jobs in Ann Arbor, Poughkeepsie, Miami and other cities; and going on frequent, often spontaneous, day or weekend trips to Canada, Syracuse and beyond with his family and his wife of 50 years, Sharon Coon.
Larry loved cars, and passed along his love of motorsports to his family. As a “motocross dad,” he traveled across New York State in the 1980s to take his son Steve to races. In later years, he supported his grandson Jesse in competition karting, and was a faithful fan at club races every weekend from April to October.
He also took great joy in being part of the life of his first grandchild, Daniel, as Dan grew to young adulthood. From tee ball with Honeoye Junior Baseball to tournaments with the Alfred State baseball team, “PaPa Coon” was in the stands for virtually every game, along with his wife Sharon – cheering Dan on as they had done for their daughter Kristin throughout hundreds of high school and college sporting events.
In later years, Larry was proud to watch his granddaughter Jemma learn to ski at age four and enjoy a close connection with his beloved pet, Toby.
Larry served the Honeoye community as member of the Richmond Zoning Board of Appeals and the Town of Richmond’s Code Review Committee, from 2012 on.
