Ethel was born October 3, 1915 in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Blanche and Woods Guffey.
In Ethel’s 97 years of life, she has had many responsibilities. Ethel’s mother died very young and at age 15 Ethel was the main person to take care of her three siblings and her father. Shopping, cooking and overseeing the upbringing of her 9 year old sister and two brothers (ages 7 and 17).
The family lived in Milton, PA, but later Ethel moved to VA where she worked as a telephone operator. After Bud’s service in the WWII Us Navy 1943-1946, he married Ethel in 1950. Bud and Ethel moved to Rochester and he passed away in 1966.
Ethel retired in 1982 from Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, where she worked as an Inspector or Quality Control and later as Supervisor.
She took the trip of a lifetime with members of her church to Jerusalem and the Palestine. She wished for world peace and hoped to see that day come before she passed. Ethel loved God, her family and friends. She loved her hometown of Milton, PA and would try to visit her relatives as much as possible. She had a great love for all animals, mostly dogs & cats.
She was a member of the Faith Bible Church, and a former member of the Honeoye Senior Citizens.
Ethel moved to Honeoye after Bud died, so she could be by her sister Edith. They lived right across the hall from each other at Park Lawn Apts. The two of them would have many adventures together, playing bingo, going to casinos together, and going out to dinner together. The two of them were very close.
She spent most holidays and special occasions with her sister’s family. Anytime Edith’s family would be over they always stopped to visit with Aunt Ethel. They loved to hear Aunt Ethel’s stories about the family. Aunt Ethel would have many stories about Grand-Daddy who was in the Civil War.
Later in life, Ethel and her sister Edith were still across the hall from each other, but at the nursing home. Aunt Ethel enjoyed when Edith’s family came, Ryan and Megan would show her photos that were on their Mom and Dad’s phones – she loved that!
At the nursing home, Ethel and Edith would be at the end of the hallway, playing cards with two close friends Thelma and Donna. The four of them had so many fun times together. They would laugh and tease each other – it was so heartwarming to see good friends have so much fun at that age in life. Edith will miss her sister so much, just like everyone that met Ethel. She was a very special person.
