Paul T. Culley ~ June 12, 2024

On June 12, 2024, at age 86, Paul passed away peacefully at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, NY. He was born on January 8, 1938, in Lackawanna, NY, to the late Claremont Culley and Margaret R. Schwartz. Paul is predeceased by his beloved wife, Cynthia Haskins, and his children, Stephanie Kulyeshie and Mark T. Culley. He is survived by his children, Matthew Culley, Patricia (Jeff) Rausch, and Maria (Harry) Smith, thirteen grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Paul was an Alfred University Alumnus graduating with a B.A. in ceramic engineering (1960). He then attended S.U.C. Geneseo, receiving his M.S. in Library Sciences. He retired from Alfred University after over 30 years as the Scholes Ceramics Library Reference Assistance Librarian. Paul was a member of many political, social, and community organizations after retirement, zealous in each commitment. Whether playing bridge or chess, attending church services or Green Party meetings, Paul engaged in conversation with his distinctive dry humor, sharp wit, and unconventional wisdom uniquely his own.

He had a deep devotion to his Alfred community. He always could be found dining at The Collegiate or The Rose Bush, welcoming anyone to his table, picking up the tab, and generously tipping the waitresses. For neighbors on Pine Hill Drive and the surrounding residences, his frequent walks would alert the dogs to “pocket treats,” to which they soon became accustomed and eagerly anticipated if they spotted him rounding the corners of their yard or approaching him with their owner on a stroll. Advantageously, the generous gift of a delectable treat was not exclusive to dogs, as the humans tethered to the lead were also offered ginger chews in various delicious flavors.

Intelligent, helpful, generous, and kind, Paul was quickly welcomed into the Weinberg Community at Dosberg Manor in Buffalo, NY, where he lived until his passing. He was noted for his warm heart, love of nature, and unique ability to make new residents feel instantly welcome, whether it was a seat at his dining table or donating jigsaw puzzles, including card tables to all the common areas for multiple access to the opportunity for stimulating conversation and shared passion for the snap of a puzzle piece in its perfect place.

A memorial service to honor Paul’s life will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Union University Parish House, 5 Church Street, Alfred, NY 14802 under the guidance of Pastor Patricia Bancroft. The family invites everyone to share an anecdote, poem, or fond introspection, creating a space to reflect on and celebrate Paul’s life.
