  1. Dear Martin family,
I was saddened to hear of your loss. At an awkward time – seventh grade – Mr. Martin’s NYS history class was just what I needed. My main memory of his class was the confidence he exuded one time when he went over to the large map of NYS and asked the class to name any location in the state and he would point it out to us. I thought that was pretty amazing at the time, and have always enjoyed geography and history. History was my favorite subject for the rest of my school years.
Best wishes in the days ahead, and may “the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials” be there for you. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4)

  2. Dear Betty, Steve, John and family,
Bill and I were so sorry to hear of John’s passing. He was a wonderful teacher and mentor to so many of his HCS students. Will never forget our history classes with “Mr. Martin”.
Wishing you and your families peace in the days and months to come.
    Regards,
    Marsha and Bill Fitzgerald

  3. To the Martin family,
Although I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting all of you I send my deepest sympathy. Mr. Martin was a great teacher and a man that truly cared about the Honeoye students. I was lucky enough to have had him as my history teacher. He will be greatly missed by many. God Bless you all.

  4. Condolences to your entire family. Many memories of your dad, first in the neighborhood growing up, and then as a teacher and mentor. It is special people like John Martin who left impressions in our lives and helped us to become purposeful
adults. Prayers and blessjng.to u all, and may u hold him close in your hearts forever.

  5. I send sincere condolences to the family. Mr. Martin was a great teacher who made history interesting! He was a good person and I know he was very proud of his sons whom I remember as warm, compassionate kids in high school. May God speed your family’s healing!

  6. Another special part of school past has gone to Heaven. I shall never forget how encouraging Mr. Martin was to a seventh grader named Steve Barnhoorn in his history class. One time, Mr. Martin played a record which would describe a person and the class was suppose to guess the identity of the person. As the record was playing, the announcer “he was born in Kinderhook, NY.” I raised my hand. A little surprised, Mr. Martin asked, “do you know who that person, Stephen.” Yes, I do. It was Martin VanBuren. A big smile on his face and he said that I was correct. He couldn’t believe I had the answer on so little information. From that moment on, I think Mr. Martin had a great history buff in his class.

I will always cherish that memory and I was most grateful to John for his support and encouragement as I went on in my life, both in the political arena as well as in life. He is going to be missed but fondly remembered.

  7. To the entire Martin family,
Our condolences and prayers go out to the entire family. Your dad was a wonderful man who loved Honeoye. He took much pride teaching and mentoring so many studenuts. It just seems like yesterday that I remember sitting in his history class. We are sorry that we will not be able to attend the Mass since we have now relocated to SC. God Bess you all.
