Geneseo/Nunda: Passed away Friday, April 19, 2024 at age 74. Elmer was born January 20, 1950 in Wellsville, NY to the late Victor and Louise (Freeland) Bird. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Geraldine “Gerry” (Vangalio) Bird; his second wife Jo Ann (Jones) Bird; his brother, Edward Bird, and his grandson Brett Bird. Survived by his children, Brian (Bobby Jo) Bird, Alicia (Matt) Gascon, Arica (Michael) Bernard; his step-son, Robert Saurini; and his siblings, Sandra DeNovellis, Stewart (Kathy) Bird, Beryl (Marcia) Bird, Esther McLaughlin, Mary (Jud) Stearns, and Vicki (Jack) Wells; his grandchildren, Breanna, Brandy, Brent and Bethani Bird, Matthew (Becca) and Anna Gascon, Abigail and Avery Bernard; along with his great-grandchildren Brantley, Brooklynn Bird, and Blake Powers.
Elmer married Gerry in 1970 and raised his 3 children in the house he built in Geneseo. He remarried in 1992 to Jo Ann and gained a stepson. They spent the last 28 years together in Nunda before her death in 2021. Elmer dedicated many years of his life to the New York State Department of Transportation from where he retired. He found solace in the great outdoors, hunting, working on a tractor, or vehicle, or using his wood-mizer. Elmer had a love of flannel shirts, jeans, and boots, he also had a sweet tooth for chocolate and ice cream. He cherished moments spent with his family and friends which would often include family dinners and attending wing night. Elmer will be deeply missed by his longtime friend John Farrell. He was a good, hardworking, loving man who touched many lives with his kindness and humor. Elmer has left some wonderful memories that will never fade from our hearts.
Friends and family are invited to call from 5-7 PM on May 16, 2024 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia. No formal funeral services will take place. Interment for both Elmer and Jo Ann will take place privately at Canaseraga Cemetery in Canaseraga, NY.
