Patricia J. Smith (Greene, Duran) ~ November 7, 2023

Sparta:  At age 85, Pat passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. She is survived by her husband, Barry, daughters; Patricia (Frank) DiGiorgio, Teresa Greene, Heather (Ryan) Charlick, sons; Bradley (Lisa) Smith, David Greene, F. Paul (Jackie) Greene, Dustin (Rebecca) Smith, and grandchildren; Jillian, Alec, Peter (Jordan), Christina (Matthew), Joshua, Juliana, Ana, Michael, Sam, and Graham. She was born on February 26, 1938, to the late John and Margaret Duran. Pat was predeceased by her first husband Bob, her sister and brother-in-law, Ann (Edward) Stanko.

Pat passed in her sleep, peacefully, with her husband Barry with her. In her final days, she was surrounded by those who loved her, and compassionately cared for by the Palliative care team at Strong Memorial Hospital. Pat was a strong (some would say stubborn!) woman. She married and began a family with Robert C. Greene, but was widowed at a young age, somehow managing to bring up four children on her own.  Although resources may have been tight at times, her children never knew scarcity.  Like her mother Margaret, Pat was unique to the core, choosing her own way and never shy about expressing her opinion. She was deeply proud of the children she had with Bob, who were each as unique as Pat.

In the 1980s, she met the love of her life, Barry Smith, and eventually heeded her children’s pleas to not let that gem of a man get away. Pat and Barry married in 1994, adding three children to her family. Pat saw in each of them the caring soul she loved in Barry. In 1998, Pat and Barry moved to their country house on a hill in Sparta, which they filled with their love and the love of their children and grandchildren.

In 2012, Pat found her little bit of paradise with Barry in Beverly Beach, FL, where she enjoyed the heat, the ocean, and her special porch.  Her smile warmed the hearts of anyone who saw it, and her face would beam when she would talk about Barry, her children, or her grandchildren.  Her cooking was also unique, but it may have been part of her master plan to teach her children how to fend for themselves in the kitchen.  She drove a stick-shift, taught her children how to as well, ran 10k races, and never turned down a glass of good red wine, or a dish of maple-walnut ice cream. She loved her sister dearly, and with the two of them now together, heaven just became a little more perfect.  We miss her dearly, and are grateful for her loving presence in our lives.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 11:00 AM at the Union Cemetery in Scottsburg. Memorial contributions may be made in Pat’s name to: UR Medicine Palliative Care-Wilmot Cancer Institute 601 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14642 or https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/medicine/palliative-care/giving.aspx.
