Dansville: At age 52, Shawn passed away peacefully, after a brief illness on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was born in Dansville, NY. Shawn is predeceased by his mother, Patricia Irene (Harrington) Genung and sister-in-law Doreen Snyder. Survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Tammy L. (Burke) Genung; his daughters, Breanna (Keegan) Pierce, Cheyenne Genung (Sam Carey); his father, Richard E. Genung; his siblings, Kris Genung, Rick Snyder, Ron Snyder (Deb Howe), Kelly (Kevin) Mark, Julie (Scott) Garrett, Richelle (Jeff) Fronk; and his grandchildren, Ryder, Kainen and Bowman, along with several nieces, nephews and his best friend, Sam.
Shawn loved hunting and the outdoors. He also enjoyed tinkering in the barn on the flea-market treasures that he and Tammy would find. Shawn always looked forward to their yearly Tennessee vacations and tried to convince everyone he knew to go there too. Through the years, his trucks have always been his sole pride and joy…that was until he became a PaPa. He loved showing his grandsons the ropes by shooting guns, riding on the tractor, going outback to “swim” in the creek and so much more. Along with being a huge animal lover; campfires, clam cookouts for his birthday, country music such as Hank Jr. & Garth Brooks were also some of his favorites.
In keeping with Shawn’s wishes, no formal funeral services will take place. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
I got to know Shawn the last couple of years ordering paint supplies from him most mornings. He was a great guy. Every morning he would call the shop and get my list of things we needed for the day. There were a lot of times I would forget to call him back and he would just laugh. Shawn was knowledgeable and a great help when we needed supplies to get things done. Im thankful I got to meet you Shawn. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family through this difficult time.
Tammy, Don and I were so sad to hear about the great loss you and your beautiful family are experiencing this holiday season, with the passing of both Shawn https://doughertyfuneralhomes.com/Obits/?p=15064… and Dick https://www.echovita.com/…/richard-e-genung-15737438. So sorry for your loss. Thinking of all of you and praying for your peace and comfort.
Shawn will be sorely missed. We sure have had a lot of fun over the years, shared lots of laughs & few tears now & then. We didn’t always see eye to eye on some things, but when it came down to it, friendship always prevailed.
Praying for Tammy, Breanna, Cheyenne and their family during their times of grief. May all your wonderful memories sustain during your darkest times
Rest Easy, Shawn… we will miss you & your infectious laugh down here.

I knew Shawn for almost 40 years. The countless great times him Jimmy and I had will never be forgotten. Truly a lifelong friend. Just like everyone as we get older we fad apart but as soon as we saw each other it was like when we were kids again and nothing changed. I will miss Shawn very much and hope that we see each h other again and talk and laugh about days gone by. RIP BROTHER TILL WE MEET AGAIN.
I worked with Shawn where he worked in Hornell and shared many a laugh and talk with him. He loved Tammy and his girls very much and was a fun guy to work with and get to know. He shared a photo album with me of a trip that he and Tammy took and was very proud of their trips to beautiful places in the wilderness. He also told me that Tammy needed help at her work and helped me get hired there, so I was able to get to work with both of them! Rest in Peace Shawn, you will long be missed. Prayers and hugs to those you left behind!
I’ve known Shawn for what feels like my entire life. I have countless memories of us out four wheeling in the mud and snow. Not long ago, Brian Whiteman and I were talking about this and viewing some pictures he had. All the “get togethers” at Meatballs, Super Bowls, Stony Brook Park and whatnot. Parties here and there. Shawn didn’t have a mean bone in his body and was liked by all. I’m just beside myself and can’t believe this. Another gone way too soon. I can’t stop thinking about this and I’m saddened to the core. My most sincere condolences to his family and the ones closest to him. I cannot begin to imagine. May Shawn forever rest in peace. He will be missed by many.
Shawn we will never forget you and we were so lucky to have you as an employee. Your knowledge of auto body parts and paint was a great help to us. RIP dear friend you are now free of pain.
