Honeoye: September 19, 2016 at age 87 years. Predeceased by his wife Gail “Chicky” Sykes and sons; William T. Sykes & Larry G. Sykes. Survived by children; Barbara (Bill) Hartman, Kimberly Stock, and Loren Sykes; grandchildren, Michael, Nikolas, John, Mariah, Danyel, Jennifer, Joseph, Kyle, and Samantha; great grandchildren, Dominick, Olivia, and Madison. Also survived by his loving companion Joan Beach.
Our Dad was quite a man! He would do anything to make a dollar to help his family. He was a “Bill” of all trades. His entrepreneurship included service station owner-bait shop, woodsmen, vegetable stand, home made unit to oil driveways and other countless ways to make a buck. Dad was one of the hardest workers that ever walked the earth. Nothing was ever given…you earned it! He loved playing basketball and baseball in his younger years and was pretty darn good at it. His hobbies included trapping, hunting, woodworking, masonry projects, nature lover, gardening and with the help of his dear Joan…stained glass beauties. Dad was a father, husband, grandfather and I’m sure if you asked around the community…they would tell you of his selfless kind acts that he performed on a routine basis. He was a US Navy Veteran, member of the Richmond Fire Company, Honeoye Lake Rotary member, Honeoye American Legion member and was a Free Mason. Our father will be sadly missed!
Friends may call on Saturday, September 24th, from 1-3PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 8624 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, where a Memorial Service will follow calling at 3PM, with military honors. Very saddened over Bill’s passing. He was the true salt of the earth and he will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Barb, Kim and Loren.
Bill, I’m proud to walk in your footsteps. A fellow veteran, running your old shop and being a member of the Richmond Fire Department are just some of the many great things you did. I’ll keep doing my best.
So sad to hear about Bill. Somehow I missed his obituary. Bill and my brother Jack were the closest of friend, and first cousin to the Thornton family. Always a good poker game when Jack and Bill were involved. Will never forget going deer hunting on many occasions, when I wasnt even old enough to hunt.But Bill would always take me when he could. Best hunter (bar none) probably in New York state. Rest in peace Bill and may God look over you.

We are so sorry to hear that Bill passed away, we often stopped at his roadside stand to get his fresh veggies and flowers. The community has lost another great man may he rest in peace and hope you will find comfort in all your memories.

To the family I extend our heartfelt condolences for the loss of your Dad. Bill taught me to trap muskrats on Honeoye Lake. When we built our house in 1976 Bill brought a bunch of guys one day to help in the construction. He had a use of a backhoe and said ” where do you want your water line to the house” and he dug it 5 ft. deep. How well I remember the deer hunts with my Dad and Bill, the poker at the deer camp, and I miss the fun we all had with his high raises. Bill was a great neighbor as well and he and Joanie would cruise by the property on his golf cart. We will always have fond memories of Bill and his friendship to my brother Stephen who he always called “Amigo”

Bill understood my fresh corn snobbiness, and called often during summer months to tell me to get the water boiling beccause he was headed out to the corn patch to pick some for me and would be dropping it off in 5 minutes. At his roadside stand when I stopped to get fresh vegetables, if I met Bill he would insist I take, and would not accept payment for, a jar of his wonderful jam or a bouquet of flowers that often artfully included a few fresh green sprigs of asparagus foliage. Bill was a Good Man. His kindness and generosity set a fine example for us all. Rest in peace, Good and Faithful Servant.
Once again our community has lost one of our finest. Like stated, he tried everything and worked at it diligently. Our condolences to Barb, Kim and Loren and his great friend Joan Beach. He will be missed by all. Like who’s going to sharpen your chain saw chain?!!! I do believe that Bill and Sully are together now just as they were in school together. I am so sorry for your loss. Bill was indeed a wonderful man, one who my father considered one of his best friends. I will always remember his many kindnesses to Mom after Dad passed. We have lost another truly great town father.
