Harlo E. McMindes – December 27, 2015

Harlo McMindes

Conesus Lake: December 27, 2015 at age 72 years. Predeceased by son Larry McMindes and brother Lester McMindes. Survived by loving partner Carol Mixon; children, Laura (Russ) Page of Leicester and Michael (Pam) McMindes of Rochester; Grandchildren, Brandon McMindes, Melissa McMindes, Tricia (Matt) Gallo, Sarah Page, Christopher Page, Alex McMindes, Lizzie McMindes, Tommy McMindes, and great-granddaughter Emma Gallo. Also survived by sisters; Shirley (Bob) Kuehne, Sharon (Vince) Peek, and Sheila (Joe) Callahan, daughter-in-law Lisa Knick, several aunts & uncles, many nieces & nephews, cousins, and friends. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Strong Memorial Hospital Burn/ Trauma ICU.

Harlo was always young at heart. As a young man working on the family farm Harlo learned the work ethic he passed on to his children and grandchildren. His passions emerged early on, wrecking every car he owned as a young man and restoring them as an “old” man. His sisters share stories of his love and of his torturing them as only a brother can. As an adult his love of motors and speed were apparent to all. He was known for his motorcycles, boats and cars. As a life-long hunter, the time spent with family and friends was more important than the hunt. The highlight of his year was the 3rd of July celebration at his home on Conesus Lake. Carol and Harlo shared their love for the lake with everyone, and everyone was welcome. Family was the most important gift to him and he was the best gift to them.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the family home on Conesus Lake in the Summer of 2016. Memorial contributions may be made to Teresa House, 21 Highland Road, Geneseo, NY 14454 or Geneseo Parish Outreach Center, 4520 Genesee Street, Geneseo, NY 14454. Arrangements entrusted to the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., Livonia-Honeoye. To send a condolence please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Harlo’s passing. As little as we knew him, we always enjoyed seeing him and listening to great car tales, and Carol, any story always included you, and what you thought, enjoyed and wanted to do.
Please know that the Donovan Family will be glad to help in any way possible. Harlo is at peace with the Lord but his spirit will always be with you.

Here is part of an article Eric wrote in the magazine (life in the finger lake) back in 2008 it was about Harlo

Recently, an old fishing buddy of mine confessed that he didn’t like mussels (one of my favorite “bivalves”) or mushrooms either, due to their texture. He hasn’t eaten Brussels sprouts since he was about 10 years old, when his mother served them boiled.

But he always jumps at the chance to have me cook for him. Later that day, we went to the grocery store to buy some ingredients for dinner, and I purchased Brussels sprouts, mushrooms and two big bags of mussels. My friend looked at me and said, “Didn’t I just get done telling you I don’t like any of those things?”

I replied, “Be prepared to like them all when I get done cooking.” And he did.

  26. Dear Michael and the entire McMindes family,
We send our deepest sympathies and are very saddened to hear the news of Harlo passing. He was truly a great man that had a superb love for family and Friends. I was fortunate to be able to know him and spend time in his company when I was growing up. He was always kind and straight forward with the truth, as well as being sportive. Many kids need that growing up. He was my first Cub Scout Pack Leader and a great dad to my best friend. I have always enjoyed Harlo’s company as I’m sure everyone that knew him did. I can see his smile and hear his laugh, which was always how it was when around him. God Bless Harlo, and all of his family, he will be missed.
    Sincerest condolences,
    Ned Stewart & family

  27. My heart goes out to the family. Harlo was a wonderful man. He could tell a good story and we always enjoyed his special fudge recipe. Thinking of all of you at this time.
