Daniel P. Durkee – September 1, 2024

Livonia/Honeoye: Dan passed away suddenly of natural causes at his home at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Elyse (Wieder) Durkee, daughters Rebecca (Thomas) Sobek and Sarah (Nathan) Mehrens, son Matthew (Laura) Durkee, niece Renee (Alan) Crowden, nephews Charles (Alyssa) Wieder and Timothy (Jordanne) Wieder, along with 11 grandchildren.

Daniel was born in Rochester, NY, and spent his entire life in the Finger Lakes area. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from SUNY Geneseo in 1969. From 1970 to 2005, he taught junior high science at Livonia Central School. In 1980, the Genesee Valley Teacher Association honored Daniel with the Teacher of the Year Award.

Dan met the love of his life, Elyse while attending SUNY Geneseo. They married on August 1, 1970. In 1978, Dan put his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, which set him on a lifelong journey as a disciple of the Lord. This gave him a new way to use his teaching gifts as he shared his faith and encouraged others every day of his life. In his later years, Dan focused on creating a lasting family legacy of memories, experiences, relationships, and faith.

He was a man of many talents. Dan enjoyed gardening, farming, hunting, helping others, telling “dad jokes,” spending time with his family, sharing his faith, and most of all, he loved the Lord.

Friends and family are invited to call from 10-12 PM on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street in Honeoye, where Dan’s memorial service will take place immediately following calling. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to: CompassCare Pregnancy Services 2024 W. Henrietta Rd., Suite 6D Rochester, NY 14623, (585) 232-2350. Or the Richmond Fire Department 4830 County Rd 36, P.O. Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471, (585) 229-5192.

  1. Our hearts also go out to each of you, Elyse, Rebecca, Sarah, Matt and each of your families. Along with so many other folks, we joined in upholding you all in prayer when we received the news; What could we say or do to bring comfort?

    Like Abraham, (Gen.18:19) Dan delighted in and was faithful in his roles as a beloved husband, father, faithful friend, and grandfather. He lived up to the Biblical name & character of “Daniel” in his life, actively involved in touching lives of others for Christ, via his commitments to education in both public school students & home schooling families, church fellowships, community & neighbors, creation & life, and addressing many issues impacting our country, the world, & society. Some day our Heavenly Father will enable us to have a fuller understanding why he was called home so unexpectedly; (Romans 8) Dan’s hope, is now a joyful reality as he is in our Savior’s presence for evermore! Our earthly separation has a limited time frame in comparison, (Eccl. 3:1) and that same hope, will one day also be our joyful reality for eternity along w/ Dan!

    We just wanted to share through a song, w/ you, as a virtual comforting hug & prayer: “O Love that wilt not let me go…” (author George Matheson.) This song also reminds us of Dan and his walk w/ our Lord, his life’s impact on so many others during his life’s journey here, as well as his love for each of you. May GOD’s LOVE provide needed comfort at this time in each of your lives’ journeys. We do not have everyone’s facebook link, email address or phone number, so please share our condolences. ” …Each line of the hymn carries a deep theological thought that propels the listener to a deeper contemplation of God’s greater love and purposes than this life can offer.”
    “In the first verse, Matheson captures the greatness that only comes from giving your life over to Christ (Matthew 10:39). On our own efforts, this life will be fleeting and produce nothing more than a weary and worn-down soul. Yet, a life that is given to Christ will experience a washing over by the depths of God’s love of which we cannot fathom (Ephesians 3:14-21), and will yield a life consumed by the very Creator and Redeemer of it. “… Here are the words:

    “O Love that will not let me go, O Joy that seekest me through pain,
    I rest my weary soul in Thee; I cannot close my heart to Thee;
    I give Thee back the life I owe, I chase the rainbow through the rain,
    That in Thine ocean depths its flow And feel the promise is not in vain,
    May richer, fuller be. That morn shall tearless be.

    “O Light that followest all my way, “O Cross that liftest up my head,
    I yield my flickering torch to Thee; I do not ask to fly from Thee;
    My heart restores its borrowed ray, I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
    That in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day And from the ground there blossoms red
    May brighter, fairer be. Life that shall endless be.

    Love & Prayers, Uncle Paul & Aunt Lorraine

  2. Dear Elyse and family,

    My heart is saddened to learn of Dan’s sudden passing . My love and prayers go out to you all, There is no doubt in my mind that Dan was welcomed home with a loving embrace by his Heavenly Father as He said to Dan “ Well done , good and faithful servant.” He lived his faith and loved his family above all. It was a gift and blessing to have been able to teach alongside him on the COMBO Team. And his students benefited by his dedication to teaching science and caring nature for ALL students. I especially smile now as I picture him heading up the team softball games as he so often did !
    May you all know how much he impacted the lives of his students and those of us who were part of his Middle School “family” .
    Love and prayers,
    Mary Jo and Dave Dussault
