Carlton E. Myers “Carl” – August 15, 2022

Canadice, NY:  At age 82, Carl passed on August 15, 2022.  He was born on December 18, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Carlton and Anne (Neschke) Myers.  Survived by his wife Ann (Dacey) Myers and children; Theresa (Ralph) Shaffer of Springwater, Jeffrey Myers of Florida, Kristen (Olena) Myers of Florida, Jeanine Barber (John Krause) of Scottsville, Peter (Judith) Coffey of Wayland, and Victor (Jillian) Coffey of Caledonia; grandchildren, Nicholas Myers, Elizabeth Myers, Anastacia Myers, Shannon (Michael) Blankenship, Cortnie Barber, Cassandra Barber (Ryan O’Connor), Suzie Barber (Emellio Franchella), Shelby (Trevor) Bettano, Kyle (Kayti) Coffey, Kasey Coffey, Claire Coffey, Tabitha Crane Coffey (Kevin Hebert), and Katie (Austin) DeGraf; great-grandchildren, Noah, Kaiden, Chase, Madden, Liam, Zoey, and Phoenix; sisters, Lynn Jones and Marjorie Lachance.  Also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Carl started off his career by obtaining degrees at Broome Community College and Siebel Institute of Technology to become a Brewmaster.  His successful life started as a Brewmaster at Genesee Brewing Company.  Determined to have another opportunity he was offered to run Western New York Syrup that was owned by Ron Allen.  ADM then took over where Carl remained employed.  In 1983 he founded Sweeteners Plus, Inc. along with his wife Ann Myers where he was the President and CEO for 38 years.  In 2008 Sweeteners Plus was awarded Livingston County Business of the Year and in 2018 Carl was inducted into the Rochester Business Hall of Fame.  He was so honored for both.

Outside of work Carl’s passions were boat racing the # 39 “How Sweet It Is” boat which included him being inducted into the Hall of Fame for American Power Boat Association in 1994 and set the World Speed record for Boat Racing.  Carl and Ann sponsored the race team associated with Dirt Motor Sports #32 and #23 and #22.  In 2008 Carl was inducted into the North East Dirt Modified Hall of Fame.  The Team won several Championships including Mr. Dirt Modifieds championship in 1999 and 2000; Super Dirt Week Championship in 2005 and 2007; World of Outlaws Championship in 2006 and Dirt Winter Nationals in 2018 and 2021.

Carl loved walking his dog Whiskers every morning on the beautiful trails he created. He loved riding his bike with the basket on the front so he could shop, which he loved to do every morning in Daytona.

He loved the Buffalo Bills and was a season ticket holder for many years!

Carl’s other passions in life were hunting and fishing and traveling all over the country.  His success in hunting gave him a World Class Bull Elk and a World Class Marlin, both ranking in the top five in the world.

With all the success that Carl and Ann have had in their personal careers they enjoyed giving back to the community to keep it thriving.

The Carl and Ann Myers Cancer Center was one of his proudest achievements as well as the Mental Health Facility in Avon and the John Shay Medical Center.

Carl most of all enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and we are saddened by the huge loss in our lives. “Sparky” as some of us called him lived life like a beautiful firework or firecracker always going and giving so much to everyone, especially to the love of his life Ann!

As Carl would say “How Sweet It Is.”

  1. On behalf of the over 600 employees of Noyes Health, I wish to express our condolences and sincere appreciation to Ann and the Myers family. Carl has served as a pillar of our community for many years and the gifts that Carl and Ann have given to our region will stand the test of time and be a legacy of a life well-lived and of honorable service to his friends and neighbors. The Ann and Carl Myers Cancer Center, Avon Mental Health and the new Jon Shay Medical Surgical Unit we’re all made possible due to Carl and Ann’s generosity and foresight. Thousands of patients have received the care they need close to home because of their kindness, and thousands more will get to live full and happy lives because of the enduring benevolence of these wonderful people. Carl will be greatly missed but his memory and spirit will live on with us for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ann and the family and all those who knew and loved him.

  2. During my years carrying out economic development in Livingston County, Carl was the best. He was a man of few words but everything he said had impact. He was the most resourceful entrepreneurs and successful businessman I met. He challenged me often in straight forth language but he was always a man of his word, fair and never reneged on anything he said. In his success, he gave back generously to the community, especially Noyes Health. A life well lived and we are all the better for him. Rest in peace and God Bless.

  5. Our family relationship with the Myers family has been multigenerational. My grandfather worked for Carl at the Genesee Brewery and my father was his VP of sales at Sweeteners Plus and a personal friend of Carls spanning over 75 years from the age of 5. My father so valued his relationship with Carl and Ann. It was dear to his heart his entire life. From their friendship spawned my lifelong friendship with Carl. I am both humbled and grateful to have been welcomed into Carls personal life over these many years. I hold decades of wonderful memories hunting and enjoying a good laugh together with Carl that are irreplaceable. He had a heart of gold.
My family and I offer our warmest condolences to Ann and her family.

He was truly a gentleman in every sense of the word and always had a smile for everyone he came in contact with. We weren’t close friends but I always felt comfortable in his presence and will always cherish his memory. His loss will be mourned by many.

  15. The original New England drivers -Ray, Neil, Cliff and Bruce -spent time talking yesterday, reminiscing about Sweeteners Plus in the “glory days”.
We each spent many years working for Carl and Ann. The teamwork and
camaraderie were powerful throughout the organization. The fleet was legendary, as was our pride.
Thank you Carl for your vision of Sweeteners Plus!

  16. Word of Carl’s passing has filled me with sadness and disbelief! Carl had a great impact on my life. I feel very fortunate to have shared many occasions over the 50 years I knew him. I hope in some small way, I was able to help Carl succeed in his business endeavors. I am very proud of working with him as his CPA throughout the Sweeteners Plus period of his life. Very few CPAs get to help a client start their business, assist in its growth and help him sell it. I was able to do just that. I thank you Carl for your support of me and our Company over that 50 years. I will miss you.

  17. Carl was a great entrepreneur who provided pay checks and a way forward for hundreds of people. He was able to do this by his uncanny awareness of how to serve a customer and understand his industry better than his competitors, All of his skills ended up in benefiting our community via Carl and Ann giving generously to Noyes Health and other charities. The Ann and Carl Myers cancer center at Noyes Hospital is a monument to their accomplishments. Thank you to his family and friends for sharing him with us. God Bless.

  18. Carl Myers was one of a kind. He was like a father to me and he and Ann made me feel like part of the family for the last 7 years. It was my pleasure and honor to have known him and I am a better man and person for it. He will be missed by all. God bless you Carl!

  19. I met Carl and Ann through our mutual love of D.I.R.T. racing and he was a quiet man but yet you knew he was in the room. Sincere condolences to the Meyers family.

  20. Anne it is with heavy heart that I found out about Carl’s recent passing. He lived life to it’s fullest each and every day. I have oh so many stories and fond memories of my times with him. From our winter get together with Nancy enjoying fine food, fireplace and dancing to battling sailfish in the ocean. And everything in between which was amazing to say the least. I am sure you are grieving at this time but you two created a million memories to get you through my dear.

May Carl Rest In Peace. I am sure he is battling a 1,000 lb swordfish at this very moment.

    All my love, Tom McFerson
