It was a warm summer evening when Tommy stopped by in Honeoye to say hi to our 94 year old Mama Ruppert.
He comes to the screen door and calls out, “Hi, it’s me, Tom Hagel.”
Mama replies, “I don’t know any Tom.”
“Yes you do,” Tom says, I used to be your paperboy. Remember?”
“Oh, my,” Mama says, “but you were never that tall.”
They commenced to have a fun remembering, about what we call “the good old days.”
Mama had a VALLEY NEWS photo on the wall of Papa Ruppert catching the largest (at the time) walleye in Honeoye Lake.
Turns out the photo was taken by George Hagel.
Guess George always signed his photography, and, sure enough, there it was.
Tommy was a lot of things. With Ron and me, he was a straight shooter. He was fair, he shared his art with our family, he shared his love of sailing, and once he even shared his heart with us.
Tom spent a lot of days up in our Canadice woods and I think that was when Tommy was the most like who he really was, or wanted to be.
Tommy around a campfire was a thoughtful, wounded soul.
That night in Honeoye was to be our last earthly visit with Tom.
Tommy, may we see you up yonder.
Rest in Him.
Tom Hagel, You will be so missed! I remember the good old days when we would visit your mom and dad’s house and you and Sue Hagel would be there.
I hope they let ya party with your angel wings on and ya never know there might be a “California Ranch” in Heaven!
RIP Tom and many condolences to Sue Hagel and family on their loss at this time.
