Richard “Rich” M. Guile ~ November 17, 2020

Rochester/Syracuse:  At age 74, Rich passed away peacefully at his home in Rochester with his family by his side on November 17, 2020.  He was born in Fulton, NY to the late Helen Guile.  Rich is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years; Linda Guile, his children; Lisa Kotyra and her husband Tim, Steve Guile, Michael Guile and his wife Jennifer, his brother; Peter Guile and his wife Sandy, his granddaughters; Sarah Kotyra, Kathryn Kotyra, Madison Kotyra, Ella Guile and Clara Guile, along with his granddog; Charlie.

We feel so lucky and blessed to celebrate our dad’s life.  Some knew him as Rich and others as “Dick”; but everyone knew of his generosity and love for his family.  Dad graduated from Niagara University in 1967 and was fortunate to have formed a group of lifelong friends.  He cherished these memories, friendships and the weekends they spent together.  He went on to work for AT&T for 31 years as an Operations Manager in Syracuse.  It was during these work years that he met and maintained another important group of friends that became his lifelong golf buddies.  Upon retirement, our dad decided to pursue an alternate career as a bus driver for the West Genesee School District.  He loved this job and enjoyed the children every day. “Mr. G” was best known for his Friday afternoon talent shows on the bus.  Sticking with this theme, he decided to add another post-retirement career; Zamboni driver for the Town of Camillus.  It was at the rink that he could see many old friends, watch countless hours of hockey and enjoy working alongside many of the students that he drove to school each day.

Throughout his life, our dad loved the water, fishing, golfing and boating.  He especially loved the St. Lawrence River where he built their beloved summer home of over 30 years. He loved to host friends and family weekends that included boat rides, fishing, tubing and plenty of fun and games.  The family memories from “camp” will live on forever. When he wasn’t enjoying the outdoors, you could find him enjoying his favorite recliner where he would often be cheering for the New York Giants, New York Rangers and the Syracuse Orange. He was so fortunate to have spent the  last several years dedicated to playing golf at the Thousands Island Club and Timber Pines in Spring Hill, Florida with our mother. We will miss him.

Due to current Covid restrictions, a funeral service to celebrate Rich will be announced and held in the future.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wilmot Cancer Institute Nursing Education Fund at: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/cancer-institute/giving/make-a-gift.aspx or by mail at Wilmot Cancer Institute Advancement, 300 East River Road, Box 278996, Rochester, NY 14627.  To share a memory or a condolence, please visit:  www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com.

  2. So sorry to read of Rich’s passing. As our neighbors on Wellesley Island, we always enjoyed seeing Rich and Linda when they came up to the River. We were especially taken by the huge family get togethers they had on New Years (snowmobiling) and the 4th of July (golf). We will miss seeing him. Please accept our deepest condolences.

  3. Dear Linda, Lisa, Steve & Michael,
It is with a heavy heart that I try and express our condolences. I have been a co-worker and friend of Rich for nearly 50 years and I can’t believe I’ll never see him again. Ginnie & I have so many memories, not only as couples, but also as families. The Nunan children even said that it’s like we lost a part of our family. Rich was generous to a fault not only with his beloved River House, but also with his time. He made everyone feel important. The memories are something that can never be taken from us!
Love Jim, Ginnie, Michael, Karen & Christine

  5. Linda and Family:
Your husband and father was a person I greatly admired. We were collogues and friends at AT&T for many years. He was not only an exceptional co-worker but an exceptional person. His many abilities were evident but what was so lovely about Dick was his sense of humor. He was a joy to be with and made us all better people. You will be in mine and Diane’s prayers to help in this difficult time.

  6. Linda, Lisa, Steve & Michael,
I worked for Dick at AT&T and was honored to be a part of his team. He was a gentleman, mentor and a friend to me. He always spoke of his family with such pride. We had such fun at team outings at your home on Wellesley Island. When I last saw him at Shove Park he was running the zamboni. That wonderful smile. My thoughts and prayers are with your family….

  7. I was fortunate to have had “Dick” hire me for a position at AT&T in 1983 and he was instrumental in my wife moving to Syracuse a few years later. He was a man who kept his word and knew how to enjoy life as well. He always spoke proudly of his family and how much he enjoyed driving the school bus and zamboni in retirement.

We hope the entire Guile family find comfort in the memories that we all have of Dick and know how much we appreciate all he did for us over the years.

    Chris & Lori Farrell

  8. Dear Linda and Family,
My deepest condolences to you in your time of need, with the loss of your husband and father. I will keep you in my prayers. Richie (as I called him) and I were next door neighbors when we were kids. He was the big kid of the group as I was about 8 and he was 10. We especially had fun going to the State theater for the Saturday matinee with his cousin Linda from Albany. To bad I didn’t realize that he lived in Camillus, as I live in Elbridge.
Once again my deepest sympathy in you loss.

  16. Linda, Lisa, Steve, and Michael:

    R. Guile as we knew him was one of my closest friends for the past 50 years. We spent many memorable times at work, on the golf course and at the card table. He was smart man with a great sense of humor. Many of us will forever remember all the great times we had at the T.I. Club and your home on the water, when we went up for our annual golf outings. I will miss our phone conversations, lunches, card games and golf matches not only at the T.I. Club but also at Cortland CC every year. It was great to see him one last time at Lisa’s home and we told the same old stories all over again. A life well lived and then some. RIP

  17. Dear Linda and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Dick in those “early NYT “ years on Montgomery St. I will always remember his great laugh and sense of humor. We sure had a lot of laughable, fun times at old Ma Bell. Although I haven’t seen Dick in a long time since our retirements, I did think of him often along with that special group of coworkers and friends and he will surely be missed. It was a privilege to be his friend. Gloria C. Majka

  22. I’m so very sorry to hear of Rich’s passing ! He was a wonderful, kind and giving Man ! He would often come over to the Pro Shop at TICC just to say hi > With my kidney issues he would ask me how i was doing even when he had his own health problems . A couple of months ago he was kind enough to call me personally . Talking to him I knew he was hoping to make it up to the Islands one more time !! He will be missed by many !!

  23. Heartfelt condolences to the entire family. I had the pleasure of working with Dick at AT&T and have many found and laughable memories. My thoughts and prays are with you all during this difficult time.

  24. I’ve known Rich for close to 50 years first meeting when there was a New York Telephone Company. Over the years we grew close as friends in a number of ways. Working companion, golf partner, savior, manager and mentor. We shared much throughout the time. Us “phone guys” knew him as R Guile. Never have I had the experience of knowing someone as kind and generous. I am so proud to have been able to call him my friend. I can’t put into words how much you will be missed by us who knew the real R Guile. Head down Richard we will catch up with you on the back side..

  25. We met Rich and Linda when Michael started dating our daughter Jennifer. We immediately liked them. When Michael and Jennifer married we were welcomed into their family and they were welcomed into our family . Our families blended. We were fortunate to get to spend holidays together. Rich shared his generosity, zest for life and love of family with us all. It is with deepest sympathy we say farewell for now. You will be sorely missed.
    Love,
    Rich and Anna Warner
