Carl A. Hayton – November 9, 2020

Honeoye, NY:  November 9, 2020 at age 91 years.  Carl was born on May 16, 1929 in Rochester, NY to the late Peter and Frances (Clauson) Hayton.   Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers; Bill, Irving “Punch”, Doug, & Laverne “Dutch” Hayton and sisters, Ginny Cappi, Clarabelle Morey, and Esther Willard.  Survived by children; Steve Hayton of Honeoye and Bonnie Cunningham of Skaneateles; grandchildren, Tom (Lauren) Cunningham and Justin (Trisha) Cunningham; great-grandchildren, Paxton and Savannah; and sister Delora Young.  Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Carl was a simple man of few words, but his actions would speak louder than his words. From humble beginnings growing up as a farmer during the Great Depression. He demonstrated perseverance and a solid work ethic and became a heavy equipment operator and a master carpenter. Carl’s life touched his family, neighbors and friends; as a highly skilled craftsman remodeling homes, building kitchen cabinets and plowing snow for his neighbors.  Carl was an active, proud member of the Operating Engineers Union – Local 832. He enjoyed afternoon toddies, hunting and fishing trips with his family and friends and he knew the importance of teaching the younger generation a proper handshake. Carl always demanded perfection in his work and instilled that work ethic in his family. In his later years Carl enjoyed telling stories to younger generations. A simple man, who would smile brightly when he was presented with chocolate cream pie, will be missed by all who knew him.

A private graveside service, with military honors, was held at Richmond Center Cemetery, Honeoye, NY.  A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held in the future.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s memory to the Hemlock Sportsman’s Club (DEC Youth Camp Program), PO Box 113, Hemlock, NY 14466. 1. I was Carl’s home health aide for little while and he was an amazing man. I loved the look on his face when he was shaved and looked in the mirror and smiled. One day he said, “I feel like a new man.” Despite everything, he never forgot who his family was and would talk very highly of his son, Steve. He also talked about his daughter, Bonnie. Carl touched my heart and many others and I am so thankful to have been able to have sat with him for many days just talking about pie, his truck, and his life hunting and fishing. I wish I knew him for much longer! God be with you all!

  2. Steve, Bonnie, and family,

My parents, Larry and Virginia Hoh, were long-time friends of Carl. He, like my father, was from a simpler time where men had many skills. Carl helped to build the house my mom still lives in, and not long ago fixed a leak in her cistern (how many people even know what a cistern is). My Dad was fast friends with Carl, especially enjoying hunting. I’m sure the two of them are tracking deer now, or building/remodeling houses. Carl was a good man with a contagious smile. He will always be in my memory.

  3. I want to send my thoughts and prayers are with Hayton Family. I was in the Coast Guard from 1974 to 1978. I loved your story and how Carl lived a rich and full life. I owe my life changing to being in the military! Especially the United States Coast Guard. We need more people like Carl in our lives. I was stationed mostly on the West Coast on patrol boats and cutters but I wish I could go back in time and serve with Carl Hayton because the service time would be even better.

  4. Hey Steve, Bonnie and family… thoughts and prayers for all of you…Your dad was the best at cabinets and carpentry….I had a blast building the barn on Knickerbocker Road….I’ll never forget hearing him say at least a thousand times…”they’ll never see it from Canandaigua”. A great friend to my father, and great friend to all. He will be missed, no doubt about it. Maybe he and my dad are building something together, where ever they may be. Thinking of you, Dave Knickerbocker

  5. Steve, Bonnie and family…
