Honeoye Lake: At age 72, Jerry passed unexpectedly on September 28, 2020. He was born on September 19, 1948 in Norwich, NY to the late Wilson and Lucille (Hayden) Sherman. Survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol (Peters) Sherman and children; Greg (Cyndi) Sherman of Honeoye and Jennifer Sherman of Buffalo; granddaughter, Summer Sherman; siblings, Matthew Sherman of McDonough, NY and Martha (Harlie) Stowell of Smyrna, NY.
For over 40 years, Jerry was an integral part of the National Ski Patrol. During that time, he served at Brantling, Bristol and Hunt Hollow. Jerry held multiple leadership positions including Patrol Director, Region Director, and Eastern Division Director. He was awarded a National Appointment and was inducted into the National Ski Patrol Hall of Fame, which is an extremely prestigious honor.
In addition to skiing, Jerry was an accomplished hiker, completing all the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks. This put him in an elite group known as the Adirondack 46ers. He was an amazing craftsman, always helping his friends with projects. Most recently, he completed a beautiful home renovation for his own home, that his family will be able to enjoy for the rest of their lives. Jerry was an avid hunter, who was always looking forward to hunting season. He loved his life on the lake, always taking his family and friends for boat rides. Music was always a big part of Jerry’s life. His musical taste has been greatly influential to his children and grandchild. He was an enthusiast sports fan, especially a loyal, yet somewhat disgruntled Buffalo Bills fan. Jerry was always taking his grand dogs, Daisy the Pug and Gus the Labrador for walks. He leaves a deep void in the many lives he has touched.

I met Jerry in 1978 when we were both candidates for the Brantling Ski Patrol. I worked with Jerry on various ski patrol projects, and what amazed me is how Jerry’s personality allowed him to merely ask for assistance in patrol matters, and the project was under way. He’s been a friend for 42 years and it will be an empty feeling not to see him this year. We always made it a point to greet each other every Tuesday morning at the top of the Comet lift off ramp. You will be greatly missed my friend. I am greatly sad of your passing.
A great Husband, Father, Grandfather, and wonderful human being has left us with memories and lessons that will never leave us. As a next-door neighbor, it was wonderful to see Jerry in action (that was his only pace we ever saw). My first encounter with Jerry lasted right up to this month. His persona never left you. We spoke just about every time we saw each other over a variety of topics. These encounters will be missed more than I can imagine.
To his family – Carol, Gregg, Cindy, Jennifer, and Summer, I thank you for sharing him with me for over 15 years. His insights and observations were very enlightening. His love for skiing, ski patrolling, hiking, hunting, and just hanging out by the fire surely speaks for his dedication to the things he loved. His love for Carol was at the top of the list.
I can still hear the “swish” of his many practice arrows penetrating the outside targets at his house and his description of how that worked out so well during the hunt. His sharing of his experiences just showed how he lived and loved life and how he helped others to do the same.
To Carol, Gregg, Cindy, Jennifer, and Summer, our prayers are with all of you.

Sorry to hear of the Loss of Jerry. May the many memories that I’m sure he provided get you all thru this trying time. I ran into Jerry early this Summer at Tim Horton’s in Victor, we talked for nearly an hour. There was many subjects of which we talked, Skiing, the Patrol, Brantling, Hops, And Family. Looking back allows me to understand how gracious of a man Jerry was. I was truly enjoyed his company each time we met.

Carol,
I was so stunned to read of Jerry’s passing in the Pennysaver. I don’t even get to read it much anymore and for some reason I had a couple extra minutes this morning that I grabbed it up and found his death notice. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope to get out of work a little early on Wednesday to express my condolences. Again hugs to you and your family,
Sincerely,
Karen Goddard
Dear Carol, Greg and Jennifer,
Karen and I wish to extend our sincere condolences to you, Carol and your family. Jerry will always be remembered as a genuine friend and mentor. We met while attending an Advanced Mountaineerng program in New Hampshire. By the time we returned to Rochester, Jerry had plans to establish Genesee Valley Regions own advanced program. Such was Jerry’s enthusiastic leadership. Over the years, we continued to enjoy many NSP activities together. Jerry was an inspiration too many and will truly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Dear Carol, Greg and Jennifer,
As a member or the BMSP family, my condolences. I will always remember Jerry with a smile on his face and I have great memories of him. He was such a gentleman. So sorry for your loss.

Dear Carol, Greg and Jennifer;
Please accept our deepest sympathies to you during such trying times.
Jerry was a true friend and mentor to me. I will cherish the “Team Friday” memories we shared. Jerry was truly a selfless guy, willing to help out with anything. He will never be forgotten, but he will truly be missed.
I cannot think of another human being whom I have admired more as a model for all of us. I think that says it all. Although I no longer reside in NY, I ski a lot & every time I see a Ski Patroller I will remember Jerry.
May he rest in peace! I’ll always remember the many years of growing up next door to Jerry. The many good times of football, baseball, and basketball! Prayers for his family on this great loss in their lives. God bless you and wrap you in his loving, healing arms.
Very Sorry to hear of Jerry’s Passing.

I have known Jerry for well over 30 years as a fellow ski patrol member, as Mountaineering Instructors, and as avid hikers. On 9/15/91, we, along with George W. and Tom S. climbed Cascade Mt. and Porter Mt. in the Adirondacks. It was 5 hours in steady rain! More recently, in his position as the Awards Advisor, he mentored me on several awards I successfully submitted. In 2018, Jerry traveled to Great Barrington MA for my induction into the NSP Hall of Frame. In was a great honor made even more special by having someone I considered a friend doing the honors. Jerry was always willing to help, dedicated to what he was doing, and kind and friendly to others. He will be missed by many. My sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Carol, Greg, and Jennifer,
Although no longer with us, please know that Jerry’s many wonderful attributes (passion, love, dedication, honesty, integrity, positive attitude, and respect for others, to name a few) will live long in many of the hearts and actions of fellow patrollers whose lives he has touched over the years. My deepest sympathies to you at this difficult time.
