Henrietta: Monica passed peacefully on May 6, 2020 at age 92. She was born on March 9, 1928 to the late Bart and Mary (Finnegan) Gaffney. Predeceased by her husband James J. Carey and brother Bill Gaffney. Survived by her daughters; Barbara Carey of Olympia, WA, Mary Ellen (Lewis) Whipple of Webster and Susan (Steve) Carey-Friedrich of West Henrietta; grandchildren, Erin (Brian) O’Neil, Lindsay Whipple, Eric Smith and Naomi Smith; great-grandchildren, Logan and Connor O’Neil; brothers, Jack (Carolyn) Gaffney and Jim (Gloria) Gaffney; and many nieces & nephews.
Monica grew up on a farm in Rush, NY and graduated from Rush High School. She attended Rochester Business Institute and later worked Eastman Kodak Co. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and homemaker, her family was everything to her. Monica married James J. Carey in 1950 and they celebrated close to 60 years of marriage before Jim’s passing in 2009.
Monica’s Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Rush, NY with burial following at St. Paul of the Cross Cemetery in Honeoye Falls, NY, all will be held privately. A Celebration of Her Life will be held in the future. I’ve had to start this a lot of times because I keep crying. I am so happy that Aunt Monica and Uncle Jimmy ate together again. I am so grateful that she has daughters who love her so fiercely. Aunt Monica and Uncle Jimmy being around were always the highlights of my youth—Funny Uncle Jimmy and the best of wives and best of women, Aunt Monica.
