Fred I. Seeley – September 29, 2019

Geneseo/Lakeville:  September 29, 2019.  Beloved father, grandfather, teacher, and football coach, died after an extended illness.  Predeceased by father, Harry Seeley, and mother, Helen (Crandall) Seeley, of Wellsville, N.Y.  Survived by wife, Marilyn (Finn) Seeley; son, Scott Seeley, daughter, Stephanie (Michael) Pizzo; grandsons, Luke and Jacob Seeley, and Michael Pizzo, Jr.; Brothers-in-Law, Rick (Sue) Finn, Thomas (Jane) Finn, and Sister-in-Law, Maureen (Finn) Rohde; nephews, William Rohde, Sean, Patrick, and Michael Finn, Ryan and Josh Finn, John Costik and Fr. Michael Costik; nieces, Jennifer Rohde, Michele (Costik) Pettis, and Chantal (Costik) Travaglini; and several grand-nephews and nieces, friends, extended family members, and many former students and players.

Fred graduated from Wellsville High School and SUNY Brockport with a bachelor’s degree in Education; he completed his post-graduate work at SUNY Geneseo.  Fred taught Mathematics for 33 years, 28 at Geneseo Central School. As Head football coach at Geneseo HS (NY), from 1970 to 1981 he coached teams to two Livingston County Division 1 Championships, four Livingston County Division 2 Championships, and one undefeated season; Fred won two R.T. French Coach of the Year Awards, and led the team to a final State Ranking of #4 [small school poll (NY) before the playoff system].  He also originated the tradition of the annual Valley Ball rivalry game between York and Geneseo, a tradition that continues to this day.

Family and friends may call on Monday, October 7, 2019 from 9am-11am at (NOTE LOCATION) St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY where Fred’s Funeral Mass will be held at 11am, following calling hours.  Burial at 2:30pm at Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, NY.   In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, is preferred.  To send a condolence or share a memory please visit:  www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

  1. My condolences. I just saw this today.
    Mr. Seeley was a fantastic teacher and role model. He was definitely one of my favorites. It only takes one great teacher to set a child in the right path. He was one of those exceptional teachers.

  2. He was a teacher like no other. Sarah Files (now Whalley, my wife) and I used to pass notes in his class. He never said anything, but he probably knew. His one-liners were the stuff of legends.

  9. We will miss you, Coach Seeley. Playing football for you at GCS was one of the highlights of my senior year. You had always encouraged me to play football and you couldn’t have been kinder to me. Rest in Peace.

  12. Fred Seeley was a great guy and helpful to a young teacher in town. Fred Seely and Gary DeBolt made a good football coaching team. I enjoyed watching them both work with HS students.

  15. My thoughts are with Mrs. Seeley, Scott and Stephanie. Coach Seeley was old school Geneseo football and will be missed. He coached some great football teams and Geneseo football was the top dog in his era. I have very fond memories of playing for him.

  17. Fred was a gifted teacher and all around wonderful guy. Used to see him in West Shurfine and the last time at the museum of play with his daughter and family. He will be missed and I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.

  19. Oh my . We are so sorry to hear about Fred. He was such a wonderful man – always so patient and friendly even when he didn’t feel well. Our prayers go out to Marilyn, Stephanie , Scott and their families.
