Geneseo: Elsie (Scottie) McPhail Emery, age 82, of Geneseo, passed away on Friday, October 7. She was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts to the late Pauline and J. Roy McPhail, and was preceded in death by her sister, Debbie (Joe) Glaser of Colorado. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

Scottie’s family was her passion. She is survived by her sons Jim (Mary Anne) of Ellicott City Maryland, and Jon of Creedmoor, North Carolina. She was loved dearly by her grandchildren, Caitlin, Jacob, Meghan, Bryna, and Annie, great grandson Levi, numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Scottie lived her early life with her family in many places. She graduated from Fairmont High School in Minnesota. Livingston County was her home for all of her adult life. She worked at Kodak as a young woman, and in 1960, she served as the Matron of the Livingston county Jail. Scottie was the Special Events Planner for 20 years at SUNY Geneseo, and was given the honor of Emeritus upon her retirement. Scottie was a member of the Association for the Preservation of Geneseo, and served on the Village of Geneseo Planning Board, which she chaired for a time. In later years, she was the owner and proprietor of MacPhail House Bed and Breakfast on Lakeville Road.

Scottie’s talents were many. She had a keen eye for antiques and was an expert needle worker. Her home was always open to family and friends, especially at Christmas, and she loved to cook and entertain. For Scottie, it was a great pleasure to pass the time in a car, traveling the back roads of Livingston County, stopping to shop for antiques, and noting the beauty and changes in the landscape and architecture along the way.

Calling hours will be at the Kevin Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Livonia, on Friday, October 14 from 4pm to 8 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday Morning at 10:30 am at the same location, followed by a private burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Geneseo.

  1. Scottie, you were so close to my mom Susie Tompkins Brown who died Feb 13, 2011 and I remember you visiting her. You were such a wonderful friend to her and she loved you. We all did. Thank you for your loyalty as a friend to my mom. I am so sorry to hear about your passing. I just had driven by the house where you used to live in Geneseo and was thinking of you. Give my mom a big hug for me. Thanks for all the happy memories. I will miss you.

  3. Scottie, Although I have only known you for 2 years, I feel like I have known you all of my life. My hours spent with you were filled with laughter, and memories of the “characters” that we both knew. I loved all of your stories and your laugh. I will miss you forever. My condolences to the entire Emery family on your loss.
