Livonia/East Rochester: Born on October 23, 1912 and died May 13, 2014 at age 101 years. She is survived by her daughter Marcia (Richard) Wilke of Pittsford. Grand-daughters; Barbara (James) Nelson of Penfield and Joanne Wilke (husband Michael Toscarelli) of Hoboken, NJ. 4 Great-grandchildren; Connor, Trevor, Harper, and Audrey Nelson. Several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mary was born in 1912 in Livonia Center, NY at her family home to parents Leonard & Fannie (Hathaway) Coykendall. Her father was present for her birth because it was too windy to thrash. Suzanne Hill still lives in that same home. Mary died at her granddaughters home in Penfield, NY on May 13, 2014.

As a child she attended a 2 room school house in Livonia Center. High School was in the Livonia at the new centralized school. She walked or rode on the back of the milk truck to get there. She was the last surviving member of the class of 1930. She attended the Geneseo Normal School for 1 year.

She married Howard H. Jewell of Livonia on August 27, 1939. Their daughter Marcia was born in 1942. Mary became the Livonia Deputy Town Clerk when her father Leonard B. Coykendall became the town clerk in 1942. When she became the town clerk, upon the death of her father in 1959, she was also named village clerk, collector of Livonia School taxes, collector of water district bills, and secretary for the Livonia Park. She retired in 1976 as town clerk and village clerk in 1978.

Mary was also an accomplished seamstress making wedding gowns, suits, men’s sports jackets, children’s clothes, and doll clothes. Knitting was one of her favorite pastimes. She made scarves, hats. afghans for several schools, church sales, and organizations. She has been a member of the Grange, Eastern Star DAR, and the Hathaway Family Geological Society. She lived in 13 different homes before moving to East Rochester in 1980 to be nearer to her family. She became active in the East Rochester United Methodist Church, East Rochester Seniors, Oasis, and the Southeast YMCA.

A Memorial service for Mary will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 2pm at the East Rochester United Methodist Church, 357 Fairport Road, East Rochester, NY 14445. A reception at the church will follow Mary’s service. Burial will be held privately at Union Cemetery, Livonia, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the East Rochester United Methodist Church at the above address or the Southeast YMCA, 111 E.
